Historical Outline of the Mariapolis Centre
The Trent Mariapolis Center “Chiara Lubich” was built by the concrete contribution of thousands of people, who saw in the Charism of Unity a way to realize universal Brotherhood.
The first brick was laid in March 1979. It took some time to find the land on which to build a meeting place for those who wished to be formed in the Spirituality of Unity.
The answer to our search finally came through a lady of Cadine who was living the Word of Life that all the members of the Focolare Movement were living, “Sell all your belongings and give the money to the poor. Provide for yourselves purses that don’t wear out, and save your riches in heaven, where they will never decrease, because no thief can get to them, and no moth can destroy them.” (Luke 12, 33). She then decided to donate a piece of land for the construction of the Mariapolis Centre of Trent.
As soon as the project was underway, the International Center of the Movement was made aware of an urgent necessity; with the common agreement of those involved, it was decided to give all the money that was collected so far to the Center. Not too long after, a large sum of money unexpectedly arrived, exactly three times more than what was donated. This coincided with the consent to build.
In the following years, a generocity contest would ensue coming from the different cities of the region of Trent. There would be raffles, flea markets, savings given, ecc. There were those who even sold their land or apartment. In the last year of construction around 800 people would contribute through volontary labor.
On May 24, 1986 the Mariapolis Centre “Word of Life” was inaugurated. Civil and religious dignitaries were present. There were also those who came from diverse Christian Churches who with their presence revealed the ecumenical vocation of the Mariapolis Centre of Trent as Chiara Lubich desired it to be. The archbishop of Trent, Archbishop Gottardi would emphasize this too as soon as the project was presented to him. He affirmed that this “Mariapolis Centre should have an ecumenical flavor. On the occasion of the inauguration, Chiara Lubich said among other things:
“This Centre will remind us of the Evangelical Revolution that the Word unleashes every time it is put into practice seriously – scattered persons would become a people. Individuals who once ignored each other would join to become a community. Also because of the Word being lived, members of different Churches will be able to accelerate the hour of full Communion.”
On January 24, 2009, the Centre is renamed after Chiara Lubich. The renaming of this Centre reminded us to return to the roots of the Focolare Movement, seeing in the Mariapolis Center of Trent, the seal of its history.
